Bat Removal Mcallen, TX
In McAllen, who handles a bat depends on which side of the city limits you're on. Inside the city, it's McAllen Animal Care Services. Outside, county animal control doesn't take bats at all. This page covers both, plus the palm-roosting bats of the Rio Grande Valley.

Inside McAllen city limits
McAllen Animal Care Services is at 311 N. 15th St., (956) 681-1919. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On weekends, a standby officer is available for emergencies only, at the same number. For an immediate animal emergency, call 911.
Outside city limits
Hidalgo County Health and Human Services' animal control picks up stray dogs and cats in unincorporated areas. It does not pick up wildlife, and its page lists bats specifically. For wildlife help outside city limits, the county refers residents to the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office at 956-383-8114. Amy Gonzalez is the DSHS-listed disease-reporting contact at the county health department, at (956) 318-2426.
Hidalgo County testing
DSHS's 2024 summary shows 22 Hidalgo County bats tested, all negative. Bats are still a rabies-risk species under Texas rules, so treat any contact as a possible exposure.
Valley bats
TPWD says the Texas-threatened southern yellow bat roosts year-round under dead palm fronds in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, sharing Washington fan palms with northern yellow bats. Brazilian free-tailed bats are the usual species in McAllen attics and roofs.
McAllen housing
McAllen's median year built is 1997, and about 26% of homes were built in 2010 or later. About 37% are rented. On tile-roofed and stucco homes, bats get in at gaps under roof tiles at the eaves, at stucco cracks where walls meet the roof, and around roof-mounted AC and vent penetrations.
Year-round activity
At McAllen Miller International Airport, average lows stay at 50°F or warmer every month, and the average August high is about 100°F. TPWD discourages exclusion from May 1 to August 15, so the window runs from mid-August through April.
