Dallas County bat testing

DSHS's 2024 summary shows 41 Dallas County bats tested, all negative. That does not mean bats are risk-free. Bats remain a high-risk rabies species under Texas rules, and counties that submit more sick or contact bats find positives every year. Contain a bat that had contact with a person or pet so it can be tested.

North Dallas bats

Brazilian free-tailed bats are the usual building roosters. Evening bats and big brown bats also use north Texas attics and wall voids, according to Texas Tech's Mammals of Texas. Evening bat pups arrive from late May into mid-June, inside the TPWD pup season. Eastern red bats use trees along creeks and golf courses rather than attics.

Carrollton housing

About 27% of Carrollton's 56,799 housing units were built before 1980, and about 18% in 2010 or later. The median year built is 1989. About 58% are single-family detached. On 1970s–80s brick ranch homes, bats get in at weathered fascia, failed gable-vent screens, and chimney chase gaps. On townhomes and apartments along Belt Line and Hebron, they use continuous soffits and parapet joints.
