Denton County bat testing
DSHS's 2024 county summary shows only 3 Denton County bats tested, all negative. That is a small sample, not a clean bill of health. Neighboring Tarrant County had 3 positive bats that year, and Collin and Dallas counties submit far more bats. If a bat touched a person or pet, or turned up in a bedroom with someone asleep, contain it safely so it can be tested instead of letting it go.
Bats around Lewisville Lake
- Brazilian free-tailed bat: the usual attic and roof-gap bat statewide. Texas Tech notes every Texas town in its range is likely to have building roosts.
- Evening bat: common east of the 100th meridian, roosting in hollow trees and house attics, with young from late May to mid-June.
- Big brown bat: forms maternity colonies of about 20 to 300 in buildings across north Texas.
- Eastern red bat: a tree bat that hangs in foliage; one on a porch or fence usually leaves on its own.
Lewisville Lake and the Elm Fork corridor give bats water and insect prey. Homes near the shoreline and older neighborhoods south of I-35E often show the same soffit and fascia gaps we seal elsewhere in the Lake Cities.
Lewisville housing
About 30% of Lewisville's 55,941 housing units were built in 2010 or later, and only about 14% before 1980. The median year built is 1999. About 31% of units are in buildings with 10 or more apartments, and about 52% are rented. On newer single-family roofs, bats get in at roof-to-wall transitions, ridge-vent ends, and gaps behind stone veneer. On apartments, they use flat-roof parapets, stair-tower siding gaps, and long continuous soffits.
Timing
At the DFW Airport climate station, about 11 miles away, average lows stay at 50°F or warmer from April through October. The average January low is about 36°F. TPWD discourages exclusion from May 1 to August 15, so the main windows are mid-August through October and a shorter spring window in April.
