What Frisco's wildlife plan says about bats

The City of Frisco's Urban Wildlife Management Plan (revised August 2021) and its bat fact sheet give residents more detail than most city sites:

  • Testing: Animal Services collects bats that are acting abnormally and sends them to the DSHS laboratory in Austin for rabies testing.
  • Fallen bats: young bats, and sometimes mothers carrying them, can fall from roosts. Don't touch them. Call Animal Services.
  • Grounded bats: bats with rabies often show the "dumb" form, staying on the ground and unable to fly, instead of acting aggressive.
  • Removal: the plan describes netting as a one-way valve and says control should start before young are born or after they can fly.
  • Risk: the fact sheet cites a CDC study that found about 6% of bats tested were positive for rabies. Those bats were submitted because they were sick or had contact with people, so the rate isn't typical of all bats.

Frisco contacts

Frisco Animal Services is a division of the Frisco Police Department at 7200 Stonebrook Parkway. Reach it through police non-emergency at 972-292-6010, or call the office at 972-292-5303. Frisco is in both Collin and Denton counties. On the Collin side, Collin County Health Care Services is the DSHS disease-reporting contact, at (972) 548-4707.

New houses, new gaps

The median Frisco home was built in 2010, about 49% of homes were built in 2010 or later, and only about 3% predate 1980. Bats still get into these homes. Texas Tech's Mammals of Texas says no style, age, or condition of building exempts it from free-tailed bats. On new construction, the gaps are usually built in:

  • Roof-to-wall joints where a lower roof meets a two-story wall, especially where the flashing is short.
  • Ends of ridge vents and gaps under the ridge cap.
  • The top of stone or brick veneer where it meets the soffit, and gaps around box-outs and bay windows.
  • Garage door trim and the ends of the garage door header.

Timing

TPWD discourages exclusion from May 1 to August 15, which matches Frisco's own advice to work before young are born or after they can fly. The NOAA climate station at McKinney National Airport, about 14 miles from Frisco, has average lows of 50°F or warmer only from April through October, and January averages about 34°F. The workable windows are mid-August through October and a short period in April.

Common questions

Will Frisco Animal Services pick up a bat?

Frisco Animal Services collects bats that act abnormally and sends them to the DSHS lab in Austin for rabies testing. Call 972-292-6010 or 972-292-5303.

I found a baby bat on the ground in Frisco. What should I do?

Don't touch it. Frisco's Urban Wildlife Management Plan says young bats and their mothers can fall from roosts, and Animal Services should be called.

Can bats get into a brand-new Frisco house?

Yes. Common gaps in new homes are at roof-to-wall joints, ridge-vent ends, the tops of stone or brick veneer, and garage door trim.

How does Frisco recommend getting bats out?

The city's plan describes netting that works as a one-way valve, used before young are born or after they can fly.

How common is rabies in bats?

Frisco's bat fact sheet cites a CDC study that found about 6% of bats submitted for testing were positive. Most healthy bats don't have rabies, but any bat contact should be reported.
