Killeen Animal Services

Killeen Animal Services runs its stray and quarantine facility at 3118 Commerce Drive, 254-526-4455. Amanda Moore is the director and Savannah Stockland is the manager. The adoption center moved to 3518 E. Rancier Avenue in May 2024. The city says it does not relocate healthy wildlife. It may send an officer when a wild animal gets into a home or vehicle, and it wants calls about bites, scratches, and sick or dead animals.

That means a bat colony in your attic is a job for a private wildlife company. A bat loose in a bedroom, or a bat your dog caught, is a call to Animal Services.

The 2017 Killeen bat case

In September 2017, the Killeen Police Department reported that a dog found a dead bat in the 2300 block of E. Veterans Memorial Boulevard. The bat went to the DSHS laboratory in Austin, and the result was inconclusive, so officials treated it as positive. That's the practical rule here. A bat that can't be tested, or can't be tested cleanly, is handled as if it had rabies. That's why you shouldn't throw away or release a bat that had contact with a person or pet.

Fort Cavazos and Bell County

Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) sits next to Killeen. Stray-animal calls on post go through the Directorate of Public Works at 254-287-2113, not the city. Off post, the Bell County Public Health District is the county disease-reporting contact, at (254) 913-7183. The DSHS Region 7 zoonosis office in Temple (254-771-6784) consults on rabies exposures.

Killeen housing

About 51% of Killeen's occupied homes are rented. With frequent military moves, a house can change tenants before anyone notices bats in the attic. The housing is fairly young, with a median year built of 1999. About 61% of units are detached houses, and about 11% are in buildings with 10 or more units. On duplexes, bats often move along the shared attic, so both sides have to be inspected and sealed together. Renters should report bat activity to the owner or property manager in writing.

Timing

Killeen has its own NOAA normals station. Average lows stay at 50°F or warmer from April through October. TPWD discourages exclusion from May 1 to August 15, when Brazilian free-tailed and other bats have flightless pups. Mid-August through October is the best window.

Common questions

Will Killeen Animal Services remove bats from my attic?

No. The city doesn't relocate healthy wildlife. It may respond when a wild animal is inside a home, and it wants calls about bites, scratches and sick or dead animals (254-526-4455). A colony in the attic needs a private exclusion company.

What happens if a bat can't be tested in Killeen?

In a 2017 Killeen case, a bat a dog found came back inconclusive from the DSHS lab and was treated as positive. Untestable bats are handled as if they had rabies.

Who handles stray animals on Fort Cavazos?

The installation's Directorate of Public Works, at 254-287-2113. Off post, call Killeen Animal Services.

I rent a house in Killeen. Who pays for bat exclusion?

Usually the owner, because exclusion means sealing the structure. Report bat activity to your landlord or property manager in writing.

When is bat exclusion done in Killeen?

Mid-August through October, after TPWD's May 1 – August 15 pup season.
