Reporting a bat contact in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi Animal Care Services, at 2626 Holly Road, takes animal bite reports at 361-826-4630 or through 311. For an emergency outside business hours, the city directs residents to the Corpus Christi Police Department at (361) 886-2600. The city's bite page says bites must be reported. If the animal has died, it is sent to a lab for rabies testing. For a bat, that means keeping it contained instead of throwing it away. Human exposure investigations go through the Corpus Christi–Nueces County Public Health District, the Nueces County entry on the DSHS disease-reporting list.

A mild-winter city

Average lows at Corpus Christi NAS stay at or above 50°F in every month. January averages about 52°F, compared with about 34°F in Lubbock. That affects bats in two ways. Bats can fly and feed in most weeks of the year, so exclusion isn't limited to a short fall window. And Texas Tech's Mammals of Texas notes that free-tailed bats rarely overwinter in buildings in the southern Gulf Coast prairies. Many building colonies here are seasonal, and an attic that seems empty in January may fill again in spring.

September is the wettest month, averaging about 6.2 inches, and it's also peak hurricane season. Storm damage to shingles, ridge caps, and soffits often opens new gaps that bats find the next spring. A roof check after a storm is a good time to look for those gaps.

Species and timing

Brazilian free-tailed bats are the main building bat here. Texas Tech also notes that Spanish-style clay tile roofs in South Texas are among the most vulnerable roofs for free-tailed bat colonies. TPWD discourages exclusion from May 1 to August 15 while pups can't fly. Because the weather stays warm, Corpus Christi exclusions can run from mid-August through early winter, and from late winter until the end of April.

  • Renter-occupied homes: 43%

Housing figures: U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2024 1-year estimates (tables B25024, B25034, B25035, B25003) via Census Reporter. Climate: NOAA 1991–2020 normals, Corpus Christi Nas station.

Almost two-thirds of homes here are detached houses, and 44% were built before 1980. Salt air corrodes steel and aluminum, and wood trim rots. We use corrosion-resistant fasteners and exterior-grade sealants on coastal homes. Steel wool rusts away near the water, so we don't use it here even though it's often recommended elsewhere.

Common questions

Where do I report a bat bite in Corpus Christi?

Call Animal Care Services at 361-826-4630 or 311. The office is at 2626 Holly Road. After hours, the city directs emergencies to CCPD at (361) 886-2600.

Do bats stay in Corpus Christi buildings all winter?

Often not. Texas Tech's Mammals of Texas says free-tailed bats rarely overwinter in buildings in the southern Gulf Coast prairies, so many colonies here are seasonal.

Can bats be excluded in winter in Corpus Christi?

Often, yes. Average lows at Corpus Christi NAS stay at 50°F or warmer all year, so bats can keep flying, and one-way devices still work when a colony is present.

Why do coastal Corpus Christi homes get new bat entry points?

Salt air corrodes metal flashing and rots wood trim, and tropical storms lift shingles and soffits. Those gaps are often where bats get in the next spring.

Which public health office handles rabies exposures in Corpus Christi?

The Corpus Christi–Nueces County Public Health District, the Nueces County contact on the Texas DSHS disease-reporting list.
